what it is to be washed from our sins by Christ, viz. unto a cleanness in the eyes of the gospel.
[1]. What the washing supposes?
1.It implies that the sinner recognizes the corrupt nature of sin and feels a deep sense of disgust and unworthiness because of it.
2. It implies a desire to be purified.
3. It means realizing that we are incapable of cleansing ourselves, no matter what we do or endure—as expressed in Romans 7:24, "O wretched man that I am! Who shall deliver me from the body of this death?"
4. It means that a person must genuinely desire to be cleansed by Christ. Christ does not force anyone to be purified against their will.
5. Lastly, it implies bringing our corrupted souls to Christ to be cleansed by Him.
[2]. Wherein our being washed from our sins by Christ consists?
Just as washing in general involves removing filth and making clean, so the washing of a soul by Christ consists in removing the filth of sin from the sinner and making him clean in the likeness of God.
1. Christ washes the sinners in the inner man
Psalm. 45:13, “The King’s daughter is all glorious within.”
Pharisaical washings only affect the outward person, but Christ’s cleansing reaches the inner being—the heart.
Adam left us stuck in the filth of sin, with a nature that’s corrupt and unclean, completely opposite to God’s nature.
Every part of our soul has been tainted, as Titus 1:15 says.
‘To the pure all things are pure, but to those who are defiled and unbelieving nothing is pure; but even their mind and conscience are defiled.
